Birth Doula Support

A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the early postpartum period.

Support may include helping you explore your options and preferences, preparing for birth, suggesting comfort measures and position changes during labor, supporting your partner or other support people, helping you understand what questions you may want to ask your medical team, and providing a steady, familiar presence throughout your birth.

A doula does not replace your doctor, midwife, or nurse and does not provide medical care or make decisions for you.

You can reach out at any point during pregnancy. Many families begin looking for a doula during the second trimester, but there is no required time to hire one.

Reaching out earlier can give us more time to build a relationship and prepare together, while later-pregnancy inquiries are always welcome when availability allows.

Not at all. Doula support is designed to complement the people you already want beside you.

I can help partners and other support people feel more confident and involved by offering suggestions, demonstrating comfort techniques, helping them understand what may be happening during labor, and stepping in when they need food, rest, or a moment to recharge.

Your support person knows and loves you. I bring experience, education, and a steady presence. Those roles can work beautifully together.

Absolutely. You don't have to be planning an unmedicated birth to benefit from doula support.

If you choose an epidural or other pain medication, there are still many ways I can support you—including positioning, comfort, communication, emotional support, partner support, and navigating the changing course of labor.

My role is to support your informed choices, not to steer you toward a particular kind of birth.

Yes. Doula support isn't limited to vaginal birth.

Support surrounding a planned or unplanned cesarean may include preparation during pregnancy, helping you explore questions and preferences with your care team, emotional support before and after surgery, partner support, and helping you transition into the early postpartum period.

What support is possible in the operating room itself depends on the hospital, care team, and circumstances of your birth.

Yes. Doulas commonly support families giving birth in hospitals.

I work alongside your medical care team while remaining in a separate, non-clinical role. Your doctors, midwives, and nurses are responsible for your medical care; my focus remains on you, your support people, your preferences, comfort, and experience.

Yes. Previous birth experiences can shape what you need from support during another pregnancy and birth.

Starlight Birth Services uses a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes communication, autonomy, consent, emotional safety, and respect for your choices. We can talk about what felt difficult previously, what is important to you this time, and how you'd like me to support you.

Doula care isn't therapy or medical treatment, but it can provide additional preparation, continuity, and support throughout your experience.

Starlight Birth Services is based in Bend and provides birth doula support throughout Central Oregon.

If you're outside the immediate Bend area, you're still welcome to reach out. We can discuss your planned birth location and whether I'm able to provide support there.

Some insurance plans include doula benefits, but coverage varies considerably by insurer and individual plan.

If you have commercial insurance with a doula benefit, we can discuss your coverage and the options available for using that benefit. Because plan details can vary, coverage should be verified for your specific insurance plan.

Yes. Starlight Birth Services accepts Oregon Health Plan clients for covered doula services.

OHP doula benefits and authorization or referral requirements can vary depending on your coordinated care organization and circumstances, so we'll determine what is needed for your coverage before beginning services.
